If you are being abused by your boyfriend or girlfriend, there are laws available to help you get safe. Here are some things you can do:
- Call the 911 or your local police: If you are being abused, you can call the police for help getting safe.
- Get an order of protection: You can go to Family Court to apply for an order of protection, or if you call the police, an order of protection can be issued as part of the criminal case.
- To learn more about what the police can do to help you, getting an order of protection, and other legal issues: visit the Police and Courts section of Finding Safety and Support.
- There are laws specific to college campuses in New York State. See Resource for College Campuses for more information.
If you are unsure if you want to call the police or go to court for help, it might help to talk to a domestic violence advocate. They can talk to you about your options and help you think through what might work best in your specific situation.Get Help
